What types of custom woodworking services do you offer?We offer a wide range of custom woodworking services, including shelving and cabinetry, furniture design and restoration, fireplace mantles, and hardwood flooring. We also handle various other woodworking projects for both residential and commercial spaces.

Can I make changes to the design during the construction process?While modifications are usually possible, significant changes may incur additional costs. Keep in mind working with wood creates situations where once a project has started it could require a complete restart depending on the change request. While paint or stain can be removed and reapplied, a six foot board cut in half will always be two three feet boards. Meaning a whole new board would be required to replace it.

How much will it cost?The cost of any project is dependent upon a number of factors. Size of project. The larger the project the higher the cost. Amount of materials. Cost of selected materials. Each wood species has varying cost at time of purchase. Ability to get selected materials. Depending on the wood chosen it may be local or need to be ordered. Shipping/transportation. Hours to completed project.

What do you need to know to start a project?The following are the basic requirements to know to start a project. Purpose: What is the project's purpose, such as furniture, a decorative item, or a practical fixture? Constraints: What are the constraints, such as budget, time, or materials? End-user: If the project is for someone else, what are their preferences and specifications? Materials: What type of materials will be needed? Tools: What tools and cutters will be needed? Glues, fillers, and finishes: What glues, fillers, and finishes will be needed?

Do you offer repair or restoration services for existing wood pieces?While some woodworkers also specialize in restoring or repairing older furniture, Mid-century Woodworking specializes in original projects. However if you have a repair or restoration need please contact us and would be happy to tell you if it is within or scope of work.

What does custom/bespoke wood working mean?In simple terms the term “custom woodworking/bespoke” means building a one of a kind, single item from the raw wood to a finished project. It’s a very different process than shopping at your local box store or favorite online “home goods” store. When you request a custom piece, we take all your ideas, measurements and work from the wood species will work best to meet the project specs. The project is one of a kind, and although we might make similar pieces, each one is unique.

Can I provide my own design for custom furniture?Yes, we welcome your designs and ideas. We can work from your sketches, photos, or descriptions to create a custom piece that matches your vision.

How do you source your wood?Mid-century Woodworking source from local lumberyards, specialty suppliers, or reclaimed wood sources depending on availability and sustainability preferences. We try to source our hardwoods from local hardwood lumber dealers within a 50 mile range. However depending on the wood there are times we utilize sources via the internet.

How long will it take to get my project?The time from start to finish will vary based on complexity, wood selection and current project backlog.

Do you use any special techniques or joinery methods?Depending on the project, Mid-century Woodworking may employ traditional joinery methods like mortise and tenon, doweling, or advanced techniques like CNC machining. For special projects or needs we utilize outside contractors to provide the needed request, an example of this would be using an outside shop for slab flattening.

How will I be involved in the process?Communication is key, including design approvals, material selection, and progress updates. Mid-century Woodworking project process typically has the following client workflow. Meet with client. Review project ideas and scope. Once a decision is made client receives detailed quote. Client decides to move forward or cancel project idea. Client reviews project documents and signs off on design/wood/finish choices. Client provides 50% deposit. Project starts. Client is supplied with status and pictures of project status via email. Project is complete. Client inspects project. Client pays remaining 50%. Client receives project via method selected at project start.

What type of finishes do you offer?Common finishes include stains, paints, clear coats, and waxes with different sheen levels.
